Chickpea probably originated in the Middle East where three annual wild chickpea varieties still exist in this region. Its culture and its consumption date back at least the ninth century. Chickpea is particularly popular in India as well as in Muslim countries. It is an integrated food in many traditional dishes in the Middle East, Egypt, North Africa, Spain, Sicily. It was the Spanish explorers who spread its culture around the world, particularly in Latin America.
